Deer score calculator

Whitetail, Boone and Crockett method. Measure in inches with a flexible tape. Fractions like 18 3/8 work. Leave blank what he doesn't have.

The widest gap between his beams, measured on the inside.

Abnormal points (non-typical)

Any point that isn't part of the typical frame: stickers, drop tines, kickers, extra points off a tine. Enter each one's length.

How we add it up

Gross adds up the whole typical frame: the inside spread (counted up to the length of his longer main beam), both main beams, every typical tine on both sides, and the four mass measurements, H1 to H4, on each side.

Net typical starts from gross and takes off how much the two sides differ, plus any abnormal points. That's why a lopsided rack nets lower than it grosses.

Non-typical bucks keep their abnormal points: net non-typical is gross, minus the side differences, plus the abnormal points.

This is your own tape, not an official score. Record book entries need a certified measurer after the rack has dried for 60 days.

What the number means

Every area grows different deer, so a buck that's ordinary in Iowa can be the best one anybody sees all year somewhere else. The fixed lines hunters measure against are the record books' minimum net scores for whitetails:

Check the clubs' own rules before you enter: these are the whitetail minimums as we understand them, and they can change.

Questions

What do I need to measure?

A flexible steel tape or a cable. Measure each main beam along the outside curve, every tine at least an inch long, the inside spread, and four circumferences per side. Go to the nearest eighth of an inch.

What counts as a point?

Anything at least an inch long. The main beam tip counts as a point when you count points, but its length is already part of the main beam.

Typical or non-typical?

If he has a lot of abnormal points, he may score better as a non-typical. Fill in both sections and the calculator shows both nets.

Can you score a buck from a trail cam photo?

Only roughly, and anyone who promises an exact number from one photo is guessing. We're building a size estimate into our trail cam reports. It will show a range and how sure it is, never a fake-precise number. The tape is still the only real score.

What is Big Buck Labs?

Upload your trail cam photos, from any camera, and we find your bucks and show when they move, what weather brings them out, and when to be in the stand. See how it works.
